Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

We didn’t spend much time in KL.  I think it is because we’re not wildly crazy about cities.  But, here goes…

We stayed in an Airbnb apartment that was centrally located and had a nice view.  But let me tell you what WASN’T great–the bathroom!  The apartment didn’t have a valve in the toilet to cut the sewer smell.  Okay, so I don’t know what that is called, but clearly we have these in the States (and most other places, for that matter).  We had to keep the bathroom door closed and put a towel up to the crack where the door almost touched the floor.  The smell of sewer was unbearable.  Gross.  So, the photos below show a nice apartment, but what you obviously can’t “see” is the horrific smell…

The Crane is Holding a Restaurant.  You get lifted up and dine at a long table high in the air.  We didn’t do this.

We went to the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park while we were there too.  It was a beautiful and huge bird park, but it was fairly typical–including a show of birds performing amazing tricks (e.g., math), and flying crazily over your head to the stage, etc.

We also did a self-guided walking tour of the city.  It wasn’t too memorable, really, but the food we ate a few days for lunch was amazing.   One day, we went to a vegetarian Indian place, and we had food reminiscent of the Indian Food on Savusavu, Fiji.  It was so incredibly inexpensive too.  We had silverware, but most people just ate with their hands.  I can’t remember how much we paid for lunch but I think it was around $15 for all four of us and we were stuffed.  Another day, we went to a Saudi Restaurant (I can’t remember the name).  One woman who came in with her family was in a Burka (her face was COMPLETELY covered), so I am not sure how she was able to eat.  They were seated in a table around the corner so I couldn’t see if/how she was able to eat.  I felt a bit like an outsider in that restaurant, but we were treated very well and the food was delicious!

Indian Lunch!  A little slice of heaven…

Kuala Lumpur wasn’t a bad city, but it WAS a city.  I think we only stayed here for about 3 nights or so, and then we decided to move on to a new country.  We had so many places we wanted to go, and mainland Malaysia was just so-so in my opinion.  I wish we could have gone to Borneo; that would have been a bit more “islandy.”  Maybe next time!
